Welcome to Amateur Equestrian Antics

I set up this blog up back in 2014 to share stories of my equestrian trials and tribulations. I had just started to event for the first time ever after a 10 year break from horses and wanted to document my journey for friends and family.

In that time I have achieved so much but still have so much further to go.

I have been supported and sponsored by some fantastic friends, trainers and businesses in this time and I have a new dedicated section of the site to tell you more about them all.

Kick starting the 2015 training with some fun at the beach

After 6 weeks of rest I decided it was time to get Corky back into work ahead of the 2015 season. We started with some light hacking last week as we still have one lovely big stubble field yet to be ploughed. I the introduced some schooling, slowly building things up with a lesson last week concentrating on using leg yeilding and shoulder-in to help loosen up Corky's back. I did some work with raised poles this week followed by a fabulous trip to the beach at John Muir Country Park.

We got ready to set off at midday to arrive for high tide - my lorry had different ideas though, problem with the breaks - the first time she has ever let me down! Fortunately I was going with my friend Kerry who kindly took C in her lorry.

The set up at the beach was great, good area to park up the lorry and then a short hack down onto miles and miles of wonderful open beach. We both had a warm up, schooling on the wet sand. C was quite excited but very well behaved for his first trip to the beach. We had a paddle in the sea and a lovely long canter along the waters edge. Surprisingly C didn't even break sweat - even through his fluffy coat. He obviously hasn't lost too much fitness while on holiday.

I have added some photos I took at the beach (a few were
courtesy of a kind dog walker).

Plan for the rest of this week is another flatwork lesson tomorrow followed by some jumping next week. Our first BS show of the year is on the 11th of January @ SNEC - fingers crossed the lorry is fixed in time!!

Finally - a double clear to finish the season

Back down to Eden Valley for our last event of the season. I spent a long time debating if I should do the BE90 - we are ready in the SJing and XC - it's just the DR still letting us down. In the end I decided to end the season feeling positive so stuck at the BE80T and boy I'm glad I did. We rode our best DR to date - a 37 so a vast improvement on Drumclog. I was actually smiling in my test as I was so pleased with Corks. Still a way to go but a good end to the season. His SJ and XC was foot perfect taking it all in his stride. We finished on our DR of 37 for 7th place - ended up only being 3 points off the winner.

What a great first season - I have learned so much and met so many lovely people. Onwards and upwards to next season. I am aiming to go straight in at BE90, and to move up to BE100 by the end of the season. Corky is going to have a mini holiday and then get back into work concentrating on our flatwork as looking at the scores in the BE90s I have a lot of work to do!
